The Cross-Over Cache Series is made for those hikers/cachers that want to do more than make it to the Summits of the KST. They offer better views than the summit caches as they afford a better vantage point of the valleys between the ridge trails. If you should go on a dry day with clear skies, you will be rewarded with spectacular views. So bring your camera! With that being said, the Cross-Over Caches are inherently more dangerous and should only be attempted by experiences hikers. You are under no obligation to go after these caches. Know you're own limits. Micro-spikes and gloves are recommended. Rain gear is also good to have. Always hike with a friend (enemies not recommended) and always tell someone (not hiking with you) your plans and estimated time of return.
Recently, I've heard that access to the Halawa Ridge has not been allowed, therefore the most reasonable way to reach this cache is starting at the Aiea Loop Trail, then moving up the Aiea Ridge Trail all the way to the KST Summit and then traversing along the KST to the cache. There are several other caches along the way to make the trip worthwhile.
The coordinates for the vicinity that you leave the Aiea Loop trail and move on to the Aiea Ridge Trail are: N21 24.310 W157 52.930. Follow the trail to the left.
Remember if you choose this route that the Keaiwa Heiau State Park closes between 6:30 - 7:00. Plan accordingly or your car may get locked in or towed.
