This cache has been archived.

Mushnikas: The county constantly closes the gates which restricts access. When I finally was able to get in, cache was nowhere to be found. Thanks to all that visited.

Geocache Description:

Robert Moses (known as RM to his top aides) was responsible for more public works projects in New York that any other person, past present or future. This cache, the 2nd  in my series of his failed projects sits on the site of a proposed highway that was to connect to a bridge crossing Long Island Sound to either Rye, NY or Stamford, CT.

Robert Moses known as “the Boss” to the thousands of employees, had more power that the presidents of his time, has built more highways than Caesar and was feared and respected by politicians and wealthy landowners throughout the New York  region. This stubborn man, who always got his way and never altered any of his plans even by an inch happened to have a few failures over the years, where he didn’t get something built the way he wanted.

Have you ever wondered why the Seaford-Oyster Bay expressway ends abruptly just North of 25 ?  When the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (NY 135) was first proposed in 1954, master builder Robert Moses planned a bridge to connect Oyster Bay on Nassau County's north shore with Stamford, Connecticut, twelve miles across Long Island Sound.  Moses, who planned and oversaw the building of the 135, wanted it to eventually continue up through Syosset, Oyster Bay over to Connecticut.

The "infamous Bridge to Rye" proposed by Robert Moses and defeated by a great deal of community support backed by local elected officials including NYS Senator Ralph Marino, a Republican fighting the tide of support for the bridge and Congressman Lester Wolf, a Democrat, who under great influence from wealthy Cove Neck landowners helped create the ultimate lynchpin legislation in what stopped the Rye Bridge with the creation of the Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge which now surrounds Cove Neck .  The Governor of Connecticut was also an environmentalist and helped to stop the crossing as well.    Not one to give up, Moses made new plans to have it go along West Shore Rd, through Bayville and crossing over to Rye, NY where it would then connect to 287.  Governor Rockefeller then stood up to Moses by citing a “shortage of funding.  After decades of unrivaled power, Moses, who was never elected, only appointed to his many positions was finally starting to lose his grip by the late Sixties, due to New York politicians that finally had the courage to stand up to him. Moses' influence was so great, as there are many reminders of him throughout New York City and Long Island. The state he is in now is "deceased and buried" since July of 1981.

Directions to Cache:   You are looking for the “The Farm at Oyster Bay” which is on the East side of Split rock Road Syosset, just South of 25A.  It looks like a private farm but I verified with Town of Oyster Bay that it is indeed, a public place tthat you can visit with the kids to see farm animals, etc.  Cache is in the rear of this 26 acre property (formerly the Littauer farm estate) .

. The cache container has been moved away from the collapsing barn, so no need to go inside it or into all the brush
