The Ruins of 'Longfields' Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mushnikas: I found these ruins quite by accident and thought it would be a cool place to bring people to learn about Long Island's gold coast past. Problem is that I found the ruins and placed the cache in winter time and had no idea that in warm weather months it would be a nightmare for cachers to struggle through thorns, poison ivy and 6 foot high weeds! I was shocked when I went to check on it in summer, and could not only find the cache myself but even had trouble finding the ruins! I looked at my torn up legs and said: I want caches to be fun and enjoyable and this one just wasn't that. If you check the geocacing.com map, you will see that this one stood alone in the whole area so maybe someone else (or me) will place a new one here that easier to get to.

Geocache Description:

The ruins of 'Longfields', the William Payne Thompson Jr. estate designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1910 in Old Westbury. While the house had been demolished some time ago there is still quite a bit left in the woods.

The estate was inherited by Thompson's nephew William Payne Thompson Preston Sr. in the early 1930s. The estate was sold to Ambrose Clark in the 1940s and the house was eventually demolished so Clark could incorporate the property into his adjacent estate.

Directions to cache:  There are a lot of woods Southeast of SUNY Old Westbury, and these ruins can be found West of Store Hills Rd.   Park where you see a small field on the West side of Store Hills Road and walk (west) into that field and onto public trails.  You will soon find 3 structures that are ruins of Longfields.  The furthest South is a small structure that has a pedestal for a long missing statue. Further north is a medium size structure and further North of that is the biggest structure.   It is the middle structure that we are looking for.  Hint: The middle structure is the name of Pink Floyd’s 1979 double album. Note: This cache was place in winter. I checked on it this summer and am shocked at how much that gz is overgrown. I suggest looking for this cache in the cold weather months when there is no foliage.
