The sourse of the River Hiz is only a 400 metres away, but already the flow is quite considerable, at least when this cache was placed, following one of the wettest winters for many years. For many years, the river here was reduced to a muddy ditch because of water abstraction at Temple End and Charlton pumping stations. The Charlton Mill pond dried up, as did the spring at Wellhead. Now it is very different, with a wide watermeadow below Wellhead farm and associated houses. This little hamlet seems to have always been separate from Charlton, and probably developed around the Knights Templar mill at the site.
This cache could be Cache & Dash for someone with a small car, M/C or bicycle since there is some space at the site. However, it is probably better to park in the village and walk along the road. The road is not busy, but care should be taken, as it is windy and narrow, and cars come at some speed, despite this. The orinal placing has changed a lot due to hedge cutting, and the old gate post has been removed. Therefore the cache has been replaced with a small screw-top with a log only - BYOP. It is possible that the original cache is still lying about somewhere, but a search failed to find it.
