Cougar Tracks Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

candlelightforge: Out hiking these trails this morning to "pick-up" some of my older cache hides. Yes noticed some cougar tracks near GZ but suspect it was long gone. Wouldn't want to run into a cougar this morning. Some are even known to post "snarky " logs on GCC 😵😵.

Thanks to all past finders who visited the cache and signed/dated the log šŸ˜€šŸ˜€šŸ‘.

Geocache Description:

You are searching for a Small 300ml loc-n-loc cache container which contains a log book, cache-note and a small selection of trade items. It should be an easy find and is a short 450 meter hike from the posted parking co-ordinates.

Saskatoon has hadĀ  cougar sightings in the past and the river bank recreation areas may occasionally be used by cougars and other animals (bears etc.) as part of their natural habitat. The Beaver creek conservation area and other recreational areas near the city occasionally are posted with warning signs that you should heed.

Please review the following suggested hiking rules and guidelines when caching in these recreational areas. Normally forest creatures avoid contact with humans but it is importantĀ  to be informed and prepared for any possible encounters.

Never Hike Alone: You’ll be safer and the extra noise helps alert cougars that there are people in the area. Pay Special Attention at Dawn and Dusk: Prime hiking hours in early morning and early evening overlap with the times when cougars are active. Beaver Dude carries a compressed air horn while
on his hikes and uses it periodically to alert forest creatures of his presence. In the province of BC you are not allowed to hike certain trail unless there is a minimum of three adults in the group. Couples or individual hikers found are escorted back to their vehicle and billed for park staff time.
Ā
Keep Children Close and Dogs on Leashes: Children and smaller individuals are more likely to be attacked. And a dog running ahead on a trail is easy prey for a cougar.

Stay Clear of Deer Kills: Deer are the favorite prey of cougars and a fresh kill is a sure sign of a nearby cougar. If you come upon an older, partially buried carcass, immediately leave the area. Cougars return to feed and will defend their kill.

Watch Your Back: Bending and crouching can make you appear more like prey to a cougar and leaves your head and neck vulnerable to attack.

What to Do During an Encounter:
Ā
Don’t Approach cougars: Seeing a cougar is a memorable experience. But keep your distance and slowly leave the area, especially if you meet up with a mother and her kittens.

Look for Warning Signs: Like housecats, cougars are curious and may observe you for a while before disappearing. If, however, the cougar is crouching, snarling, or begins stalking, an attack may be imminent.

Make Yourself Look Bigger: Wave your arms slowly over your head and open your jacket or shirt to appear as large as possible. Yell, clap your hands, use your air horn or bang on objects to scare off the cougar. Carefully (and while minimizing any crouching) pick up children and put them on your shoulders.

Don’t Run: Turning and running can stimulate a cougar’s chase instinct. Instead, back up slowly while speaking firmly and loudly and maintaining direct eye contact. Be aware of what you can throw at the cougar if it begins to act aggressively. But don’t assault a cougar that isn’t showing threatening behavior.

Fight Back: In the unlikely event of an actual attack, use whatever you can—fists, rocks, sticks, backpack—to fend off the cougar. Try to remain standing and get up if you’re knocked down.

GOOD LUCK!! Stay alert on the trails and enjoy the cache..
