This rock is known as John Brown`s rock as to the East the rock profile resembles that of Queen Victoria of Great Britain (reigned 1837 - 1901). Following the death of her husband, prince Albert in 1851, Queen Victoria completely withdrew from public life and spent most of her time at Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands and whilst there she found solace in the companionship of gillie (an attendant on a fishing, fly fishing, hunting, or deer stalking expedition) John Brown who had commenced his royal employment as a stable hand. He soon became the most influential memeber of the Scottish Royal Household. While the Queen could be brusque and petulant with her servants, family and ministers, she submitted to Brown's bullying and familiarity without a murmur. Despite warnings of this unpopularity with the nation, the Queen was adamant he would not be sacked. Her great confidence in him was rewarded when he saved her from an assassination attempt, after which he was vaunted as a public hero.
On this rock outcrop can be found petroglyphs (rock carvings)- dating back 3,000 years - of human figures and various, now locally extinct animals, such as ibex, oryx, ostrich and even a lion overlaid with examples of early Arabian writing so it is worth bringing your camera. The easiest climb is from the South side but it is possible to climb from the North West side.
