~~ Opened in 1834 as a chapel of ease to Painswick and dedicated to HOLY TRINITY. The Church comprises of a chancel and nave designed by Charles Baker of Painswick. A gallery was added in 1836 but removed in 1869 when a North aisle and porch were added to designs of Benjamin Bucknall. In due course it became a Parish Church in its own right. It not only served the village of Slad but the developing area of Uplands further along the valley towards Stroud. On May 11th 1910 a new Church All Saints Uplands was consecrated and these two sister churches now serve the Parish.
A stained glass window was installed to commemorate Laurie Lee, this Church Micro is dedicated to Laurie Lee who would have been 100 years old on 26th June 2014.
An extract from his Biography
"I was set down from the carrier's cart at the age of three; and there with a sense of bewilderment and terror my life in the village began.
The June grass, amongst which I stood, was taller than I was, and I wept. I had never been so close to grass before. It towered above me and all around me, each blade tattooed with tiger-skins of sunlight. It was knife-edged, dark, and a wicked green, thick as a forest and alive with grasshoppers that chirped and chattered and leapt though the air like monkeys. I was lost and didn't know where to move. A tropic heat oozed up from the ground, rank with sharp odours of roots and nettles. Snow-clouds of elder-blossom banked in the sky, showering upon me the fumes and flakes of their sweet and giddy suffocation. High overhead ran frenzied larks, screaming, as though the sky were tearing apart."
The churchyard is well worth a look around, as the graves are set in tiers as you climb the winding path.
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list.
The cache itself is a 35mm film canister, and a pen is required as there is no room in the container. Stealth is possibly required at certain times of the day.
