For all the rock hounders/collectors this is a must do. The rating will be hard, but I really want you to find it, so don't give up. This is an abandoned mine that is way awesome to explore. I was told that the claim has expired, and all the research makes me think that is the case. There are no signs preventing entry into the mine. The mine is now a tunnel to a big open pit since the main cavern collapsed, causing the mine to be abandoned.
If you go to the top of the cavern, it is more dangerous for the slip and fall. The access to the cache is through the mine shaft, NOT FROM THE TOP OF THE HOLE! When I was in the cavern, my GPS reception was spotty, about 27 feet so I can not say that the GZ is that accurate. Knowing that this mine does get visitors, we hid the pill bottle cache well, but it is in the main cavern not any of the mine tunnels.
Say hello to the big Barn owl, but please be respectful, this is his home, and you are his visitors.
What is Fluorite used for you ask? It is a mineral that is used in steel production to draw the impurities out of the molten steel. The Fluorite from this mine was used in the local steel refineries until the mine was no longer productive. It is a very dark purple color but will fade in long exposure to the sun. In some mines the fluorite will form large crystals, this one has small crystals and can be easily broken.
