Geocaching the Pacolet #6 “The Great Wall" Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

gpsfun: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Download your Pacolet Passport Grid here to begin:

This geocache contains a laminated card with a symbol on it.
PLEASE do not remove the card.
You are to draw this picture in the corresponding square on the Passport Grid.

If the gate is open, you can drive into a second parking area, but if not, please park in the area of the Parking way point coordinates and get ready to walk the gravel trail along the entire length of "The Great Wall of Pacolet!"

This is the site of Pacolet Mill # 3. You are actually underneath the main structure of the old mill...in essence the basement!

Standing here, it’s easy to visualize just how much of the two basic building materials, lumber and stone, were needed for this early textile mill, but this is just the foundation! Tremendous quantities of timber were used for the mill frame and floors. Many of the timber beams had to be huge to support the loads they carried. The heavy textile machinery vibrated as it ran , often around the clock. If the mill was not built strong enough, it could be literally shaken apart.

Much of the timber needed was from trees felled and sewn close to the vicinity of the mills. The stone wall here was made from thousands of pounds of stone mined from a local quarry, and dry-stacked with no visible mortar!

This cache is located within the wall, but visible, so please don't disturb the other stones and only remove the one necessary to retrieve the cache.
