WARD MUSEUM: SCHUMAKER MARSH WALK

The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art rests on the picturesque Schumaker pond.

Established in 1968, the Ward Foundation has been dedicated to promoting wildfowl art and preserving the legacy of Eastern Shore decoy carvers, Lem and Steve Ward. In 1975 the Ward Foundation established the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art and in 1992 the Ward Museum opened at Schumaker Pond.

As part of the Ward Museum Living Classrrom, the Schumaker Marsh Walk is dedicated to the Memory of Eugene Burkett. This nature trail along Schumaker Pond provides interpretive signs about the wetland environment. From the edge of the pond, you can watch the geese, ducks, and other water-fowl both on the pond and on land. They use the beach to come on-shore to rest and eat and, sometimes, to nest. You might even get to see a Great Blue Heron fish in the shallow water around the edge of the pond. An observation scope is available for viewing birds at a distance and an observation blind lets visitors quietly observe pond activity. A bird feeding garden brings a variety of songbirds within easy view. The fishing pier provides trouble-free access to the pond.
