Geocache Description:

A cache along the Mziki Trail in the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve.


 


 


One of Kwa-Zulu Natal’s most spectacular natural settings, the scenic Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve lies some 21 km inland from Port Shepstone.

The reserve was proclaimed in 1 April 1950, is 1 917 ha in extent and the camp commands an impressive view of Oribi Gorge.

The Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve lies snugly at the head of a spectacular river gorge lined with dense coastal bush and forests, just inland of Port Shepstone. The breathtaking scenery along the Umzimkulwana river gorge makes this a photographer’s and nature lover’s paradise.

Oribi Gorge has a wealth of smaller wildlife species and visitors have occasionally see leopards. Oribi Gorge is a magnificent birding destination wit more than 250 species recorded. Self-guided trails descend into the gorge of follow the edge of the cliffs providing beautiful vies of the surrounding countryside.

Visitors Activities

The scenery formed by the Umzimkulwana river makes this a photographer’s and nature lover’s paradise.

There are numerous idyllic picnic spots on the bank of the river.      Visitors are, however, advised not to swim or paddle in the river because of the risk of contracting bilharzia.

There is a reservoir swimming pool, with a sundeck, in the camp for exclusive use by residents     Many delightful walks and self-guided trails to the scenic spots in the reserve have been laid out.  Details of these walks may be obtained from the Hospitality Manager.

Wildlife to be seen in the reserve includes species such as bushbuck, common reedbuck, blue and grey duiker.  Leopard occur in the area.  The abundant birdlife in the reserve makes bird-watching a rewarding experience.

Private operators conduct a variety of activities within the reserve, the bungi swing being most popular with thrill seekers

The Cache

The cache is hidden a short distance along the Mziki Trail.  Use the published co-ordinates for parking - this is very close to the cache and there is ample safe off-road parking for at least three cars.  Please ensure that you pull off the road completely!

Because of the heavy tree cover, your GPS signal may be erratic - so a spoiler pic is provided.


Maintenance will be carried out by a local geocacher.
