A bit of history:
For centuries the river provided the villagers with energy for milling. The water for the mills was led out of the Eerste River fairly high up and channeled into a mill stream which flowed through the centre of town. This "molenwater" also provided drinking and irrigation water to the dwellings along the river. Not a single mill with its waterwheel has survived, but the mill stream has become a permanent embellishment of the town.
