Andamooka is a small town in South Australia known for little other than opal mining. Opal was discovered in the area in the late 1920s. The opal levels around Andamooka are generally shallower than other opal fields such as Coober Pedy and Lightning Ridge, making it a popular field for prospectors with limited capital. The field does produce some beautiful stones, and significant finds include the 'Andamooka Opal' - a 203 carat opal presented to Queen Elizabeth when she visited Australia in 1954 - and the opalised Addyman Plesiosaur - a plesiosaur fossil where precious opal has replaced the bone.
