PE1 (and on and on) Letterbox Hybrid

This cache has been archived.

Beach_hut: Retiring this one as it has been somewhat troublesome, and also the link to the start location has gone now the Post Office has moved.

Will rethink.

Geocache Description:

The cache is not located at the published co-ords, but you will need to visit them. Please read the cache page fully before proceeding. No stage of this cache - apart from possibly stage 1, is a park & grab.

One of a series of caches placed for the WWFM event in Peterborough in June 2014. All such caches can be done as standalone caches, so you can do all in the series in one go, or one or two at a sitting as your time permits. PLEASE BEAR IN MIND THAT THIS CACHE IS ONE OF THE MORE COMPLEX OF THE SERIES, AND MAY REQUIRE MULTIPLE TRIPS. You'd be advised to bring a pen, and also read the cache page thoroughly before setting out.

About this cache:

We've always wanted to hide an letterbox with an urban setting. So here we are. And of course if you're going to do that round here, then this location would be suitably apt to start, we thought. Also, we've been somewhat tantalised by this phrase written in the guidelines:

"Letterbox-style clues may be used to guide seekers to the container"

So we've made our interpretation of what that means a core part of this cache. Feedback as ever gratefully received.

Please note this is a three-stage cache. Stage 1 is virtual, stages 2 and 3 are physical. There is a walk of around 20 minutes from stage 1 to stage 2, and the D and T ratings for this cache reflect that. After that, it's a short walk from stage 2 to stage 3, which is the final location. Naturally you must locate this stage and sign the logbook to claim the find - having found stage 2 isn't sufficient in and of itself.

The final cache contains a stamp which you can use on your own personal letter-boxing book, if you have one. Do not remove this stamp or the pad from the cache. If you've got your own personal stamp, by all means stamp this in the logbook.

Stage 1

Go to the published co-ordinates and have a look around. There is a sign set into the pavement. Count the words on the sign, and call this number A. Count how many times the letter I appears on the sign. Call this B. Count how many times the letter U appears on the sign. Call this C.

Close by on the same side of the road is a building named after a British historical figure. How many letters are in their surname? This is D. How many letters are in their first name? This is E.

The first name isn't given anywhere at site but I'm taking it that it's general knowledge - if needs be bring a source of mobile internet with you or phone a friend.

Getting from Stage 1 to Stage 2

Once you've located the features above and got numbers for A to E, then substitute them into the below:

Stage 2 is located (A-B)C(E-A)D metres from Stage 1 at a bearing of (E-D)CB.BE degrees

Many GPSes have the facility to project waypoints from a set of co-ordinates, and most smartphones have apps that will accomplish the same thing. If you're stuck, the mobile source of internet or friend with a computer referred to previously will be of use. The related web page link is one of many that will do the job (no registration needed).

The geochecker below will confirm you have the correct co-ordinates for Stage 2, and have some leeway built in to allow for rounding differences etc.

Stage 2

You can either walk from Stage 1 to Stage 2, which as mentioned is a 20 minute-ish journey, or you may be able to drive and park nearer. We'd emphasise again Stage 2 isn't a park and grab. You are looking for a small camoed tub.

Getting from Stage 2 to Stage 3

Once you've located Stage 2, then turn your attention to Stage 3. To get from Stage 2 to Stage 3, follow these instructions:

Stand by the {A} next to stage 2, then turn to the {B}. Walk forwards until you reach a {C}. Then turn to the {D}. Walk until you've gone past the {E} similar object. Then turn to the {F}. Keep walking, keeping the {G} and the {H} to your right, until you reach a {I}. Go past this object, and you will notice a {J} in front of you. Stop around six feet short of this. Turn to the {K}, and the cache is behind the {L}, obscured by {M}.

Well it'd be too easy if we gave you simple instructions just like that, now wouldn't it? The letters A-M denote words, the values of which are contained within Stage 2. Marry the words up with these instructions, and all will make sense hopefully.

Stage 3:

The final location. You are looking for a customised container. No spoilers please.

Other Stuff:

The cache is in a safe location to retrieve and replace.

Please replace the cache as found, and refer to the hint if you're not sure. I've made it as specific as can be.

A NOTE ABOUT MUGGLES
Please make an educated decision about the level of muggle activity when you arrive at GZ, and if you find it's just too muggly, we'd suggest you return another time - we'd rather you protected the cache. Thank you.
