~~On a recent trip to Germany I visited the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. One of my high school alumni from 1960 is a docent there and offered me a personalized tour. The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, Germany, displays around 750 paintings from the 15th to the 18th centuries. It includes major Italian Renaissance works as well as Dutch and Flemish paintings. Outstanding works by German, French and Spanish painters of the period are also among the gallery's attractions.
The Old Masters were European artists working before 1800. Their work was characterized by extreme technical skill and a certain sense of distinctive and sometimes haunting beauty which has kept the artwork popular through the centuries. Since the time period for works of art classified as old masters is broad, a huge assortment of artistic styles and techniques are encompassed under this umbrella term, as are a range of artists including Raphael, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Albrecht Dürer, among many others.
A bit of intrigue was added to the gallery visit. The docent shared that the art curator with the aid of a visible wave length optical spectrum analyzer, had discovered a secret message hidden in one the master’s engravings.
It read: “Das Geheimnis verbirgt mit der Bestellung”, 1514 AD and it had these symbols:
I have not been able to make any sense of this enigma, but perhaps some of the more skilled geo-puzzle solvers in the area might have a fresh idea to decipher what’s in the message.
