Pecan Bayou meanders through the gentle hills of central Texas from
near Abilene to its meeting with the Colorado River, west of
Goldthwaite. Named for the abundant trees that line the banks,
Pecan Bayou was a favorite of early homesteaders. Reliable water
and good bottom land for farming and ranching led many to settle
along the Bayou. Modern "homesteaders" from the big cities of Texas
and surrounding states now own many of the original sites. But,
here and there, remnants of the original settler families still
exist.
Place names in little, out of the way spots recall old ranch
families and settlers. Old buildings mark the sites of old ranches,
settlements, stores and post offices. This virtual cache celebrates
one such spot in Brown County, near Lake Brownwood. It is hidden
among the trees along Pecan Bayou and few folks outside the
remaining families have ever been there.
If you have a choice of when to visit this cache, pick the
spring. I returned there for a meeting in the last week of April,
2002. The wildflowers, especially the Bluebonnets, were outstanding
(a gift of a wet spring). It was a real treat for someone from the
New Mexico deserts. Take a few minutes to wander around and enjoy
the serenity of the place.
CLAIM QUESTION
Claim answers for some TX virtuals may have been compromised and
passed around, so I have included a third part to the claim
question. You must answer all three to claim the cache. To claim
this cache, you need to go the coordinates and find the nearest
thing with words. Then figure out the significance of the initials
"S.R." and when did J.M. McPeeters stop here. Once you figure out
those things, describe what is under the big tree just outside the
fence and about 50 feet to your left.
DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS ON THIS CACHE PAGE, EVEN IF
ENCRYPTED
Email me through geocaching.com with your answers to the above
questions before posting a claim to have found the cache. Any
claims not preceded by an email with the correct answers will be
deleted.
Please note: If I answer your claim email and receive a automated
return requiring verification of my email address, I will not
respond to those as a matter of course. Some of those services are
nothing but address harvesters and I choose not reply to them.
Slainte Mhath & Enjoy your visit!!!
