Geocache Description:

Cache is not at posted coordinates. The caches in this series all contain questions related to the history of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. All the information needed to answer the questions in this 21-cache series can be found by going to the corps Guidon.

Six of the Medal of Honor caches (seven total) all contain hints to help you find a 21st cache. You need to complete those first before going after the final one in the series. All containers in the series, except for the final, are small homemade bisons constructed out of PVC with soda bottle tops. They are painted in such a way as to be VT appropriate.

Best of luck! Contact cacheNquilt or myself directly with questions. Take care, and best of luck!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1872, on October 1st, a young man left his home in Craig County, Va., to enroll as the first student at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, now known as Virginia Tech.  In a walk spanning over twenty-six miles and crossing two ridgelines, this student became Virginia Tech’s first cadet.  A statue of him making the trek is currently located on the Upper Quad at Virginia Tech, where the Corps of Cadets resides.

In 1997, cadets began a voluntary march, named in his honor, to recreate this student’s trek from his family’s homestead site to the middle of Upper Quad.  In 2000, the march was undertaken by all freshmen cadets and their chains of command as one of the many rites of passage freshmen cadets undertake.  The march is broken into two phases, thirteen miles long each, and signifies advancing to new stages of training for freshmen cadets during the year.  Every freshman cadet now undertakes this tradition.

Virginia Tech’s first student was:

  1. Thomas Lane                     N 37 3.285           W 76 24.501
  2. William McBryde               N 37 3.285           W 76 24.499
  3. Addison Caldwell               N 37 3.485           W 76 24.501
  4. Thomas Conrad                 N 37 3.485           W 76 24.499
