Saint Michaels derives its name from the Episcopal Parish established here in 1677. The church attracted settlers who engaged in tobacco growing and ship building.
For over 340 years Christ Church has stood at the heart of St. Michaels offering leadership, guidance and sacred space to an ever-changing town and community. Originally established in 1672 as a mission of the Church of England, they became part of the new Episcopal Church at its creation in 1789. The buildings have changed over time. The current beautiful edifice, built in 1878, was completely renovated and restored in 1989.
Despite this church's presence on the shore of the harbor, the town of St. Michaels early became predominantly Methodist following visits by itinerant Methodist preachers. Braddock donated land for a Methodist church in the center of St. Mary's square, and a brick structure built as the Sardis Chapel remains on that site.
