Geocache Description:

Leviathan is a sea monster referenced in the Tanakh or Old Testament.  In the environs of Mount Buffalo it is something completely different but perhaps could be termed a monster in its own right.

The Leviathan is a large balancing boulder and can be found just off the road on the right (when heading toward The Horn).  It is a remarkable landmark and an indication of how these granite boulders can present in this landscape. The huge breadth of this boulder creates a semi-cave environment and needs to be seen to be believed.  When there, take a moment to look at the rocks that this monster balances on, quite amazing.

You are looking for a 200ml Sistema container hidden at ground level. No climbing is required at this site, just a sense of adventure.

How do I get there?

When approaching from Lake Catani, parking is about 600m before The Cathedral.  Access is only a few meters via a walking path from the road and classified as “easy”.

Be Prepared

This is a granite environment which requires climbing and negotiating boulders and potentially tight spaces.  It is HIGHLY recommended that these caches are attempted with two or more people for safety reasons.  Please ensure that the Ranger’s or a close family member are given a plan of your movements and anticipated return in case of an emergency.

The best months for walking are from November through to April, however, weather conditions can change rapidly, and snowfalls and blizzards can occur at any time of the year.  During the summer period, bushfires can also pose a threat so check the CFA website for updates prior to departure.

Be prepared with:

• Helmet with reliable head torch (additional torches)
• Appropriate clothing, we recommend long trousers

• Wind and waterproof jackets
• Warm clothing – hat, gloves, sunglasses, and strong footwear (rubber soles)
• Food and water
• First aid kit and sunscreen
• Map and compass
• Check the weather forecast before departing
• Let someone know where you are going
• Mobile phone (reception in most areas)
