BARBER PARK is named for the historic town of Barber which was once located in the area. Barber was a small, self-sufficient company town established in 1906 for employees of the Barber Lumber Company. It had a population of approximately 650 and was named after company president James Barber. The town had a water system, a sewer system, a school and a post office as well as a sawmill and a wooden dam which were used to process the lumber sold by the company. The dam contained a hydroelectric plant that supplied electricity to the town. After the Barber Mill closed in 1935, the town was torn down. All that remains of the town today are parts of the dam and mill.
