Geocache Description:

“The Great Train Robbery”
by Michael Crichton
Published in 1975

In the early 1900s the railroad was king. It was a main transportation resource for people and goods. Then came automobiles, improved roads, motor trucks that could reach places railroads could not, large highways and ultimately semi-trucks. As more and more of the freight business was "stolen" from the railroads, the tracks began to see less and less use and ultimately in the mid-1960s many rail corridors were abandoned or transferred to the communities. As the rails were removed, more and more people would would start walking along the old railroad grade for fun and exercise, especially in the Midwest. The railroad industry's loss became the communities gain.

The cache is hidden along one of the newer sections of the Cardinal Greenway Trail (formerly the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad line) just north of Webster, Indiana. This cache is available dawn to dusk, seven days a week. Parking is available just a few hundred feet south of the cache at the trailhead N 39° 54.821 W 084° 57.128. Do not park along US 35 to access this cache. There is poison ivy in the area, so if you are allergic take care or bring along a friend who is not.

This cache is part of the Decades of Discovery series placed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Morrisson-Reeves Library. There were eight original caches in the series, each themed around a book or movie, that took you to unique places throughout Wayne County, Indiana. The series is slowly shrinking due to persistent muggles. We will keep as many of the original hides going as we can.
