Welcome to Morris Park Racetrack! Back in 1890, and up until 1904, this entire neighborhood was a racetrack. From Pelham Parkway in the north, to Sackett Avenue and the Amtrak tracks to the south and east, to Bronxdale Avenue in the West, stood a huge and opulent racetrack. Morris Park Racetrack's grandstand held 20,000 spectactors and the stable held 2,000 horses. Morris Park Racetrack even played host to the Belmont Stakes up until 1904. The racetrack clubhouse stood roughly at the intersection of Fowler and Van Nest Avenues. After the Belmont Stakes left The Bronx, the racetrack became the world's first dedicated airfield. In 1908, the world's largest dirigible, American Eagle, at 105 feet was built here. The military even made use of the airfield for testing planes during World War I. During this period, the area was also used for automobile racing. In 1913, the entire track was offered for sale and the development of the area began. Today Morris Park is a residential area, with Morris Park being one of the main commercial strips of the neighborhood. There are several great delis, restaurants and pizzerias just short walk from the cache. please stick around and explore a great neighborhood.
