History
On December 16, 1915 the '250th Tunnelling Company’ started with a deep shaft at the ruins of 'Vandamme Farm’. To increase speed they tried to install a drill used in some British coal mines. This initiative failed. When it appeared that the machine was broken and assured little progress, it was decided to abandon it. This monster is still there, about 20 meters underground.
Meanwhile the excavation in the original gallery continued smoothly. After 550m the German lines were reached, and another 100m further splitted in Y-shape under Petit Bois. In the early morning of June 10, 1916, the Germans detonated two powerful charges. The most northerly of them almost above the main gallery, which did collapse over about 75m. 12 men were enclosed at a depth of 30m in a tunnel 1.3 m high and just 0.9 m wide. Only one 'tunneler' could survive the adventure. His companions are buried in Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.

Op 16 december 1915 startte de ‘250th Tunnelling Company’ met een diepteschacht bij de ruïnes van ‘Vandamme Farm’. Om het tempo wat te verhogen, probeerde men een aangepaste boormachine die gebruikt werd in sommige Britse koolmijnen, over te brengen en te installeren, een onderneming die faalde. Toen bleek dat de machine in panne viel en weinig voortgang verzekerde, besloot men het gevaarte niet langer te gebruiken. Deze bevindt zich momenteel nog steeds ergens een 20tal meter onder de grond.
Ondertussen bleken de graafwerkzaamheden in de oorspronkelijke galerij vrij vlot te verlopen. Na 550m werden de Duitse linies bereikt, om nog eens 100m verder Y-vormig uit te lopen onder Petit Bois. In de vroege morgen van 10 juni 1916 lieten de Duitsers 2 krachtige ladingen tot ontploffing brengen, waarvan de meest noordelijke zich vrijwel boven de Britse hoofdgalerij bevond en deze over 75m deed instorten. Hierdoor raakten 12 mannen op een diepte van 30m afgesloten in een tunnel van 1,3m hoog en amper 0,9m breed. Slechts 1 ‘tunneler’ kon het avontuur overleven, door zich stil te houden en zo weinig mogelijk zuurstof te verspelen. Zijn makkers liggen begraven op Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.

Le 16 Décembre 1915 la ‘250th Tunneling Company’ creusent une mine profonde dans les ruines de la ‘Vandamme Farm’. Pour accélérer les travaux ont essayé d’installer une machine d’excavation, utilisé dans certaines mines de charbon britanniques. Cette initiative a échoué. Quand il est apparu que la machine était en panne et qu’elle n’assurait peu de progrès, elle a été abandonnée. Ce colosse se trouve encore quelque part à environ 20 mètres sous terre.
Cependant l'excavation dans la galerie originale à plus de succès. Après 550m les lignes allemandes sont atteintes et 100 mètres plus loin le couloir termine en forme Y sous Petit Bois. Le matin du 10 Juin 1916, les Allemands font exploser 2 grandes charges dont celle la plus au nord, presque au-dessus de la galerie principale, fait effondrer celle-ci sur une longueur de 75m. 12 hommes sont enfermé à une profondeur de 30m dans un tunnel de 1,3 m de haut et 0,9 m de large. Un seul «tunneller» survit. Ses compagnons sont enterrés dans le cimetière militaire de Kemmel château.
