History
Near 'Maedelstede Farm' the Germans undertook several attempts to outsmart the enemy underground. Their efforts were not rewarded. Late 1916, the '250th Tunnelling Company’ started the construction of two steel shafts, which were connected to each other via a gallery. From there started two new shafts. From each shaft started a gallery: one in the direction of the ‘Maedelstede Farm’ and one in the direction of Wijtschatebos. Some heavy German counter-mines forced the British to slow down. Digging to a minimum the ‘tunnelers’ were running out of time and they stopped the excavation direction Wijtschatebos. The main effort was now focused on ‘Maedelstede Farm’. On June 2, 1917, five days before the Big Bang, the second largest mine in the Ypres Salient was ready.

Ter hoogte van ‘Maedelstede Farm’ ondernamen de Duitsers van op hun hoogte verschillende pogingen om de vijand ondergronds te slim af te zijn. Hun inspanningen konden echter niet beloond worden. Eind 1916 startte de ‘250th Tunnelling Company’ met de bouw van 2 staalschachten, die met mekaar verbonden werden via een galerij. Van hieruit startten 2 nieuwe schachten. Uit elke schacht vertrok er een galerij: één richting Maedelstede Farm en één richting Wijtschatebos. Enkele zware Duitse tegenmijnen verplichtten de Britten om het graven tot een minimum te beperken. Het heimelijk wegbrengen van de losgegraven aarde vergde bijzonder veel inspanningen en bracht de ‘tunnelers’ in tijdsnood. Uiteindelijk werden de graafwerkzaamheden richting Wijtschatebos gestaakt en werd alle moeite gefocust op Maedelstede Farm. Pas op 2 juni 1917, 5 dagen voor de ‘Big Bang’, was de tweede grootste mijn in de Ieperboog in gereedheid gebracht.

A la hauteur de 'Maedelstede Farm’ les Allemands entreprenaient plusieurs tentatives pour se montrer plus malin que l’ennemi. Leurs efforts n'ont pas été récompensés. À la fin de 1916, la '250th Tunneling Company’ commence la construction de deux cheminées en acier, qui sont reliés entre eux par une galerie. De là sont construitent deux nouvelles cheminées. De chaque cheminée part une galerie: une direction ‘Maedelstede Farm’ et une vers Wijtschatebos. Quelques contre-mines allemandes forcent les Britanniques à réduire leurs travaux au minimum. Les ‘tunnelers’ abandonnent l’excavation direction Wijtschatebos par manque de temps. Le 2 Juin 1917, cinq jours avant le Big Bang, la deuxième plus grande mine dans le saillant d'Ypres est préparée.
