History
The ‘Spanbroekmolenkrater’, named by the British ‘Lone Tree Crater’ (today called ‘Pool of Peace'), is undoubtedly the best known of all the craters that were created on June 7, 1917. The Germans had fortified this position, where there used to be a mill before the war, into a stronghold. The excavations were started in January 1916 by the '250th Tunnelling Company' and later taken over by respectively the '3 rd Canadian Tunnelling Company’, the '175th Tunnelling Company' and the '171st Tunnelling Company’. On June 6, 1917, just hours before the Big Bang, everything could be prepared for a "successful" explosion.

De 'Spanbroekmolenkrater', door de Britten 'Lone Tree Crater' genoemd (vandaag ook wel 'Pool of peace'), is ongetwijfeld de bekendste van alle mijnkraters die ontstonden op 7 juni 1917. De Duitsers hadden deze hoogte, waar voor de oorlog een molen stond, tot een bolwerk versterkt. De graafwerkzaamheden waren in januari 1916 gestart door de '250th Tunnelling Company' en later overgenomen door respectievelijk de '3rd Canadian Tunnelling Company', de '175th Tunnelling Company' en de '171st Tunnelling Company'. Pas op 6 juni 1917, slechts enkele uren voor de 'Big Bang', kon alles in gereedheid gebracht worden voor een 'succesvolle' explosie.

Le ‘Spanbroekmolenkrater’, nommé ‘Lone Tree crater’ par les Britanniques (aujourd'hui ‘Pool of peace’), est sans doute le plus connu de tous les cratères qui ont été créés le 7 Juin 1917. Les Allemands avaient fortifié cette altitude, où avant la guerre se trouvait un moulin. Les excavations ont commencé en Janvier 1916 par la '250th Tunnelling Company’ et plus tard repris par respectivement la '3rd Canadian Tunnelling Company’, la '175th Tunnelling Company’ et la '171st Tunnelling Company’. Le 6 Juin 1917, quelques heures avant le ‘Big Bang’, toute préparation était enfin terminé pour une explosion "succès".
