History
Near ‘Ontario’, for the British or ‘Backhof’ for the Germans, the Germans held and fortified the heights. Earlu 1917 the '171st Tunnelling Company’ decided to excavate beneath the fortified farm. The excavation work was greatly hampered by the quicksand and abundant flooding. Late May a suitable position has been reached and a charge could be placed.

Ter hoogte van ‘Ontario’ voor de Britten of ‘Backhof’ voor de Duitsers hadden deze laatste een hoger gelegen hoeve in handen, die ze grondig versterkt hadden. Pas begin 1917 besloot de ‘171st Tunnelling Company’ om deze versterkte hoeve te ondergraven. De graafwerkzaamheden werden sterk gehinderd door het drijfzand en overvloedig wateroverlast. Pas eind mei werd een geschikte positie bereikt (onder ‘Ontario Farm’ of ‘Backhof’), waar een mijnlading op het laatste nippertje geplaatst kon worden.

Près de ‘Ontario’, pour les Britanniques, ou ‘Backhof’ , pour les Allemands, ces dernier étaient en possession des hauteurs qu’ils avaient avaient soigneusement renforcée. Début 1917 la ‘171st Tunnelling Company’ décide de creusé sous cette ferme fortifié. Les excavations furent fortement ralanti par des sables mouvants et des inondations. Fin mai, une position idéale est enfin obtenu pour mettre la charge.
