P&LE Exchange Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Faycocache: This geocache has had a good run. Unfortunately when they had finished the bridge(check it out, it has a beautiful new wooden walkway with benches and is a beautiful scenic overlook) they had closed off the path to this geocache. All geolitter has been cleaned up. Stayed tuned for a fresh hide around this area as I love this area. Thank you to all who have found it over the years!

Geocache Description:

 photo 269063-M_zps3deb4d13.jpg

The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE), also known as the "Little Giant", was formed on May 11, 1875. Company headquarters were located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The line connected Pittsburgh in the east with Youngstown, Ohio at nearby Haselton, Ohio in the west and Connellsville, Pennsylvania to the east. It did not reach Lake Erie (at Ashtabula, Ohio) until the formation of Conrail in 1976. The P&LE was known as the "Little Giant" since the tonnage that it moved was out of proportion to its route mileage. The P&LE West Yough Bridge was built in 1904 to cross the Youghiogheny River and make a connection with the B&O Railroad on the other side. It is about a mile northwest of Connellsville. After the 1970's it saw little or no use, but the tracks were not removed until 2007. Now on opposite ends of the bridge are CSX and the Great Allegheny Passage. West Yough Bridge has become a bit of a local famous landmark.

This cache is located within feet of a once popular railroad bridge that helped make Connellsville and the surronding areas what they are today. The cache is a small container with room for some small swag, and there is some to start out this cache. Please hide just good as you found if not better. Some stealth may be required during certain parts of the year so always be aware of muggles.

You can access this cache by parking at the trail access in Connellsville and heading towards Dawson which would be about a two mile round trip, or park at the Dawson trail access and head towards Connellsville about a 4 mile round trip.

**The easiest way to access this cache is to walk directly towards the bridge and there is a trail that dips down to the right. It can be a very nasty walk after it rains so please use caution.**
