Strassoldo (Strassolt in friulano e tedesco), frazione di Cervignano del Friuli, costituisce un raro esempio di antico borgo medievale, estremamente ben conservato, e di raro fascino. Berceau della omonima famiglia patrizia, che ha dato all'Impero degli Asburgo d'Austria una lunga serie di importanti funzionari e generali.
Attorno alla torre maestra del secolo VI, mozzata nell'Ottocento ma ancora alta 12 metri, si sviluppa il Castello di Sopra, con il palazzo signorile, vari fabbricati (un tempo con funzione agricola ed amministrativa) e la Chiesa di San Nicolò.
Il castello superiore fu abbattuto nel 1381 dal patriarca Filippo d'Alencon per ribadire il dominio di Aquileia su quella terra, promessa dagli Strassoldo alla potestà della Serenissima. Ma l'impegno fu comunque soddisfatto di lì a pochi anni.
Saccheggi e devastazioni rovinarono il complesso fortificato e le residenze per le lotte provocate dalla lega di Cambray (1509). Risale a quel tempo la ricostruzione degli edifici, protrattasi per ben tre secoli, con sovrapposizioni, aggiunte e demolizioni.
L'interno del palazzo presenta ambienti ricchi di memorie familiari.
Al centro del Borgo di Strassoldo si trova la chiesa di San Nicolò, che conserva, tra l'altro, una croce in pietra di fattura longobarda, testimonianza dell'antichità del luogo.
Uscendo dalla porta Cistigna, si può vedere un antico mulino del XII secolo, che ha lavorato per oltre settecento anni. Al suo interno sono conservati i vecchi macchinari.
Di incantevole bellezza è il giardino del Castello di Sopra, realizzato verso la metà del Settecento, dove una trecentesca Magnolia Passiflora domina con garbo lo spazio circostante.
La caratteristica porta secentesca cuspidata in cotto conduce al Castello di Sotto di Strassoldo, che si compone di edifici rustici e della Chiesa di San Marco, la quale presenta una facciata arricchita da patere in marmo con raffigurazioni zoomorfiche, databili al periodo romanico.
Le sale interne del castello sono impreziosite da soffitti lignei databili alla fine del Cinquecento.
Nel settecentesco parco, uno dei più attrattivi in Friuli, si possono ammirare specie arboree rare ed antiche, due bellissime peschiere e numerose statue.
Di pregevole importanza è la vicina Chiesetta di Santa Maria in Vineis, collocata esternamente alle mura del castello. All'interno vi è conservato un ciclo a fresco, databile al Trecento, che risulta essere tra i più rilevanti in regione.

The upper castle was pulled down in 1381 by Patriarch Filippo d'Alencon to confirm the rule of Aquileia over that land, promised by the Strassoldo family to the Serenissima Republic of Venice. This promise was fulfilled a few years later.
Sacks and devastations damaged the fortified complex and the residences due to the fights caused by the League of Cambray (1509). The reconstruction of the buildings, which continued for three centuries with superimpositions, extensions and demolitions, dates back to that period.
The interior of the palace features rooms rich in family memories.
At the centre of the Town of Strassoldo you will find St. Nicholas' Church, which preserves, among other things, a Lombard stone cross, evidence of the ancient origin of this place.
Coming out of the Cistigna Gate, you will see an old twelfth-century mill, which was used for over seven hundred years. Inside, it preserves the old machinery.
The garden of the Castle of Strassoldo di Sopra, realized around the mid-eighteenth century, is extremely beautiful: a fourteenth-century Magnolia Passiflora dominates the surrounding space.
The characteristic seventeenth-century pointed fired brick gate leads to the Castle of Strassoldo di Sotto, which is made up of rustic buildings and of St. Mark's Church, which features a façade enriched with marble paterae with zoomorphic representations, which can be dated back to the Romanesque age.
The rooms of the castles are enriched with wooden ceilings that can be dated back to the end of the sixteenth century.
In the eighteenth-century park, one of the most beautiful in Friuli, one can admire rare and ancient tree species, two beautiful fish ponds and several statues.
Of great importance is the close Church of Santa Maria in Vineis, situated outside the castle walls. It preserves one of the region's most important fresco cycles, which can be dated back to the fourteenth century.
