Jernaldertuftene på Åse Traditional Cache

Her på Åse ble det for 1800 år siden bygd noe arkeologene kaller ringtun. Slike ringtun var ei samling av militære anlegg og hadde som funksjon å beskytte folket på øya mot ytre fiender. Slike anlegg som jernalderhøvdingene lot bygge lå gjerne et stykke unna annen bosetting, på plasser som ga godt skjul og god utsikt over havet – hvor fienden gjerne kom fra.

Åseanlegget besto av 14 bolighus tett i tett i en ring, omkranset av en jordvoll og med en åpen plass i midten. Anlegget framsto dermed som en borg som hadde en diameter på vel 40 meter. Muligens inngikk Åseanlegget i ei sammenslutning av flere høvdinger på øya. (Kilde: Andøy Historielag)

About 1800 years ago there was built something archaeologists call a "round yard". Such round yard was a collection of military facilities and had the function to protect the people of the island against external enemies. Such facilities as Iron Age chieftains had built were usually at a distance from other settlements, in locations that provided good cover and a good view of the ocean - where the enemy would likely come from. 

The Åse facility consisted of 14 residential houses close together in a circle, surrounded by an earthen and with an open space in the middle. The plant thus emerged as a castle which had a diameter of about 40 meters. Possibly signed the Åse facility in a combination of several chiefs of the island. (Source: Andoy Historical Society)
