Aluminum pill container right on the history trail in Watchung Reservation. The trail here has purple and white blazes, continuous with the Sierra Trail. ONLY TWIST OFF THE CONTAINER BOTTOM; LEAVE THE TOP HANGER IN PLACE PLEASE!!!
This is my first hide in my favorite park, my 57th overall cache. It's about time. This one does use some deception given the placement right smack dab on the trail. Use caution due to the frequent foot traffic here.
The cache is located just west of the deserted village of Feltville and just east of the Drake Farm, the ruins of which you can still make out. The area is so rich in history that a school of archeology makes its home here. The Drake Farm had occupants right up to about 1940, producing food for the summer tourists in Feltville who would come down from New York for a country retreat. It's hard to imagine any agriculture here, let alone a golf course, but that claim is made on a story board.
The cache brings you to a secluded glen that, like the rest of the Reservation, is never without road noise but which nonetheless seems to impart a wonderful feeling of peace.
I've traversed these trails for over 50 years, having grown up in Summit. I still remember the outdoor "zoo" by Trailside Museum, gone for decades. As a foolish youth I could never understand all the hubbub over the completion of Rt. 78 through the park. Now I finally get it: this nature and history preserve was worth preserving!
Enjoy and God bless!
