Sarah sat on the porch rocker; her hands limp in her lap.  She was exhausted from crying and praying.  She had no more tears, no more prayers.  She was empty.  This August had started with such promise.  The dreadful war was over and Clinton would soon be home.  He was in Mississippi with Wilson’s Calvary Corps. Sarah had received a letter from him just last month that his unit would be heading back home to Michigan in a few short weeks.

Five-year-old Teddy had been so excited that he would soon see his Papa.  He was only a baby when Clinton had joined the 1st Michigan Volunteer Calvary, and he had treasured the stories of his brave father.  Clinton had not even met little Albert, and now, it was too late.  He would never have the chance to hold his little blue eyed three year old who charmed everyone he met with his smile that reminded everyone of his father.

The doctor had said it was the morbid sore throat that took her Teddy.  He had suffered for two days with the fever and chills and the fire in his throat, but then, when his neck swelled up and he turned blue, Sarah knew he was lost.  Her boy wasn’t in his grave for two full days when little Albert got sick too.  The feeling of hopelessness grew in her heart as she watched her precious boy lose his fight against the demon that was taking him from her.  Now, he lay at peace, in his little trundle.  Waiting to be laid beside his big brother in the Aten Cemetery.

The hot wind blew the gritty dirt down the lane, swirling up the dust devils ahead of the storm she could see on the horizon.  Rain.  They needed rain.  Only last week, the ground had been so hard when they had dug poor Teddy’s grave it had been like chipping rock.  Now, they would need another one.

How could she go on without her babies?  How could she put her last baby boy in the cold hard ground? How would she tell Clinton that his boys were gone?  That she couldn't keep them safe for him while he was fighting this terrible war.

Sarah’s grief filled her and her tears began to fall just as the August rain came down.
