Geocache Description:

A quick grab off of I-79 exit 105. [[BYOP]]

Please remember where you are and be respectful of those resting here.

This is the Old Mitchell Cemetery.

The cemetery is named for Rev. John Mitchell. Born in England in 1763.

John came to the United States as an 11-year-old. He started working in the shipping industry bound to a sailor. On his second trip to the United States, he jumped ship and hid until it departed without him. He fought in the Revolutionary War, signing up twice.

Rev. John William Mitchell was a minister for 40 years. In 1819 Rev. Mitchell helped organize and build Harmony Methodist Church just up the road from here. (Find the multi-cache there to learn about the church).

Mitchell died on April 29, 1840, in Lewis County, Virginia. This location is now in West Virginia, but he passed away before the state was divided. This tract of land was his home farm, and he is buried here.
