In Sunndalen southeast of Åheim you can go treasure hunting for real! Find your own gemstone!


Sørøst for Åheim på søre Sunnmøre finnes en av verdens største forekomster av mineralet olivin. Norge står for over halvparten av verdensproduksjonen av dette mineralet. Olivin er et lysegrønt til brunlig, sprøtt og glassaktig mineral med kjemisk formel (Mg,Fe)2SiO4. Smykkesteinsvarianten kalles peridot.

På Peridotplassen i Sunndalen har man laget til et lite område med picnicbord og grillplass. Her dumpes jevnlig lass med grus som blant annet inneholder peridot, men også andre fine mineraler. Peridot kan slipes til flotte smykkesteiner. Tre av de største fasettslipte peridotene i verden finnes i «Helligetrekonger-skrinet» i Domkirken i Køln.


Southeast of Åheim in Sunnmøre you find one of the world’s largest deposits of the mineral olivine. More than half of the total world production of olivine is found in Norway. Peridot is the gemstone variant of olivine.

At Peridotplassen in Sunndalen you will find a picnic area where you can search for peridot and other nice minerals in the gravel. Three of the world’s largest facet cut peridots can be seen on “Shrine of the Three Holy Kings” in the Cathedral in Cologne (Germany).
