Pecans in the Cemetery
Many years ago, long before the new four lanes that brought you here today, highway 165 was the main street through the town of Tullos, one half mile west of this site. Many back roads and trails led from the farms and settlements into town. One such road passed by this cemetery which had a rather large pecan tree just inside the fence. Now it was told that two young boys had filled their bucket with pecans and sat down behind this big old tree to divide their pickings. Sounded something like this,” One for you, and one for me”. “One for you, and one for me”. Now during the process two pecans nuts were dropped and rolled down next to the fence. Not to be distracted the boys continued to divide their pecans. “One for you and one for me”, “One for you and one for me”. It was somewhere along this time another young boy rode up on his bicycle. He was not able to see the boys behind the tree but he did hear,”One for you, and one for me”, “One for you and one for me,” coming from inside the cemetery fence.
Being sure of what he had heard and what he thought was going on, he mounted his bicycle and made a flying trip to town to tell his story. The first person he met was an old crippled man with a cane. He told him the Lord and the Devil was down at the cemetery dividing up the souls. The old cripple said that he could barely walk and he didn’t believe him anyway. The boy begged and pleaded with the old man until he gave in and made a laboring journey down to the cemetery. Quietly they slipped up to the fence and sure enough. There it was, “One for you and one for me”, “One for you and one for me”. On hearing this, the old mans eyes were big as two fried eggs and he began to shake and tremble all over. The sweat was pouring.
“You are right”; “You are not lying.” “Maybe if we get a little closer we can see the Lord.” Holding on tight to the fence wire the two were straining just to get a glimpse when again they heard, “One for you and one for me.” “Well that about does it.” “Now when we get those two nuts by the fence we’ll be done here.”
The old man was back in town a good 15 minutes before the boy showed up. Some even said he was riding a bicycle.
