Geocache Description:

Construction of the Split Point lighthouse in1891 was one of the large major investments by the colony of Victoria to safeguard navigation through the treacherous water of Bass Strait.

Having this lighthouse between Cape Otway and Point Lonsdale improved the savety of shipping which supported the development of colonial Australia.

Anderson and Sons, a Melbourne company, built the 34metre high lighthouse from concrete rubble on a clay foundation.

The original kerosene light was converted to automated operation with acetylene gas in1919. With this automation lighthouse keepers werde no longer needed.

The original system of lenses and prisms still focuses the beam which is visible on a clear night some 33km out to sea. The light has four flashes over 10 seconds repeated after a second gap.
