The cattail marsh is located in the Conservation Management Area (CMA) of the Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA). This area contains critical wetlands, vernal pools, forested areas, and the Silver Brook, a feeder stream to the Passaic River.
Spring 2014 Cattail Marsh
This cattail marsh is a wet depression in an open area with no canopy cover. Years ago it may have been a much deeper pond that has gradually filled in. This spot has become home to Great Blue Herons, green frogs and spring peepers. In 2010 a new boardwalk has been constructed through the cattail marsh.
The cattail marsh boardwalk construction was started during the summer of 2010 by GSWA and local corporate volunteers. The GSWA was looking for volunteers to complete the project before winter. A partnership was formed between The Northern New Jersey Cachers and THE GSWA. Volunteers were recruited to construct and complete the boardwalk. The photos below are the from the boardwalk construction .
In November 2010 the cattail marsh boardwalk was completed with the help of some local Northern New Jersey Geocachers - Old Navy, The Surfcaster, Jeeeper1, Swamplande'r, Fusilli Jerry, and BigA800. (Justin & Allan not pictured) Thanks to these folks who volunteered their time to complete this boardwalk for this beautiful park. Also pictured are GSWA members Hazel and Steve who managed this project for GSWA.
The scenic trails throughout the CMA will cover woodlands and marshes. There are a variety of boardwalks, but after a rain some parts of the trails may become wet and then proper footwear is recommended.
