Thompson's Hole Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

wildniagara: I never thought this one would last so long but high waters was my last thought to how it would go missing. It wasn't well hidden but it should have been plenty high enough but we learned better on October 31st. Climate Change is an amazing thing. Hopefully this was the worst we'll see here for a long time but I'm not betting on this location again. I could have used that Tupperware at home. Instead it's now probably at the base of Niagara Falls.

Thompson's Hole is the deepest part of the Upper Niagara River at about 45-60 feet deep depending on weather conditions. Water upstream is only about 16 feet average and as it plunges down into this hole the water displacement causes a huge back-drift or back-flow. As the water is forced back out the other end onto a flat only averaging about 12 feet deep it is sent to the surface in large boils which create this large flat water feature. Silt, gravel and dead crustaceans settle here and create a a ripple effect that looks like underwater sand dunes. Due to the flat surface of the water and normally clear water flowing from Lake Erie the bottom can be seen by boaters in fine detail.

One of my favourite places to kayak on a sunny day. Looking below you can clearly see the small-mouth bass, muskellunge and walleye swimming about.

This spot was once a popular swimming area despite it dangerous currents. The now closed bakery on the corner served the community for years and the entire intersection is known as "The Bakery". When boaters come here to fish they are fishing the bakery drift or Thompson's Hole.
