As America was being settled and local governments were being formed, the citizens often wanted to name their new community after famous leaders. It was common that the names of Presidents were chosen for the newly formed counties.
Our research shows there are 261 counties which have same name as the last name of a former United States president. (although some of these clearly were not named after the president). THE CHALLENGE is to find a cache in each of 10 different US counties (or Louisiana Parishes), named with the last name of 10 Different former US Presidents. If you choose to use two different presidents with the same last name (Adams, Harrison, Roosevelt, Johnson, & Bush), you must use two DIFFERENT counties in different states (i.e. Adams Co PA, and Adams Co ID). Although there are 31 states with counties named Washington, you may only count one of them towards this challenge.
There are several Jefferson Davis counties, these do NOT qualify for this challenge. (However could be used for the “All the Confederate President’s men” Challenge cache which may be created deep in the heart of Dixie in the future! ) Only counties sharing US Presidents last name count, so Warren and Rutherford do not qualify. (and for those of you who slept through history as I often did, neither Benjamin Franklin nor Alexander Hamilton were ever President of the United States (even though they have a combined 35 counties named after them).
All caches found in the past may be used. For puzzle caches, in which the cache might be in a different location than posted coordinates, the posted coordinates will determine the county for purpose of this challenge. All caches currently allowed by GC are acceptable, however no Locationless or Benchmarks will qualify.
Documentation must include Presidents name, County Name, Cache GC Code, and date found by you for each of the caches used to qualify for this challenge. This may be in form of bookmark, screenshot, list in log or any other reasonable method which we can use to verify your qualification.
Note: Final cache is a P&G – Terrain rating is based on distance you must travel to capture these 10 caches.
For those folks who care about such things we have found caches in 150 counties with Presidents last names representing 27 different presidents.
Update 7/14/16 - Today we found a cache in Roosevelt County Montana. We now have found caches representing each of the 33 Presidents with counties of the same name. We have found 219 of the 261 US counties with same name as presidents. We have found all the counties with same name as 13 of the presidents.
