Geocache Description:

This cache I hope highlights the interesting recent history here and is v.close to the interpretation panel. Please stop and have a read.

Following the muggling of the previous cache, a new one has been put in place, but in a more eye level position, in a slightly different location and with a "silver twist!" Room for a log only & tweazers may be required, as well as stealth. A new section of canal was dug two miles south of Gloucester in 2005-06 in connection with the construction of Gloucester's South West Bypass. The new channel has cut off Two Mile Bend which has always been difficult for long vessels to negotiate.

The new section was required so that when the bridge opened there would be a reasonable length of bypass to accommodate queuing traffic to the busy Cole Avenue junction to the south. It also allows the bypass to have a reasonable gradient between the level of the Cole Avenue junction and the platform of the new bridge, which needs to be high enough for most boats to be able to pass underneath (a clearance of 4.7m). The new section is the same width and depth as the existing canal with the narrow section at the bridge having the same width as the other bridges. The old bend in the canal was partially filled in to provide space for the Bristol Road junction, leaving two short arms of the canal. The milepost formerly located on the inside of the bend has been re-sited to the cache location. The Netheridge Bridge across the canal is reportedly the second largest swing road bridge in the country.
