The Lower Bann River flows from Lough Neagh at Toome to the Atlantic Ocean at Portstewart. The river is 38 miles (51 km) long and is a canalised waterway with five navigational locks at Toome, Portna, Movanagher, Carnroe and Castleroe. It acts as most of the county border of Counties Antrim and Londonderry. This series has 13 caches at or nearby 13 bridges (used and disused) . The series can be undertaken by boat if so desired but if on foot, remember, the river is close by so keep an eye on any geo kids and hounds, not forgetting yourselves. The cache is accessible to wheel chair users but help will be required to get cache.

The present bridge, carrying the Belfast – Londonderry railway across the River Bann, opened in 1924 replacing an earlier bridge slightly further upstream. It is 800 ft long and has eleven spans. It cost £100,000. The span to the west of the operating house is known as a bascule span and lifts to allow ships to pass below. It has a signalling arrangement which prevents a train being the block section when the bridge is not lowered.
