This is an interesting tree by the lovely river Cam. When I placed the cache, the tree was showing signs of a recent lightning strike, and that probably explains the unusual trunk. I had the choice between placing a very large cache low down, or a smaller one high up.
Let's face it; these don't get visited much. It's never going to be a cache that people swap trackables and suchlike in, so I went with the 35mm container, and put it about 6 metres in the air to create what I hope is a very fun and technically challenging tree climb. You're not getting a spoiler photo for this one, but be aware that the climb is delciate on thin branches (thickened up somewhat since the cache was placed), and will require precision and care while standing on some very thin branches, or you will break the tree.
The cache is visible from the ground, if you know where to look.
Oh yes, and have total fun on the way down!
Approach: walk or cycle along the towpath either from Chesterton (1/2 hour's walk) or Baits Bite Lock (20 minutes walk). This path is unlit at night, so please take care if doing this in the dark.
As mentioned above, the cache requires delicate climbing on thin branches to reach. I weighed 76 kilos at the point when I placed it, but I was very careful. Please be careful too.
Congrats to Cannonfodder32 and MissKemosabe for the FTF - impressed you both went up there at the same time!
Good luck!
A note on grading: This tree was not in a great state when I placed this cache. It had recently been struck by lightning, and pollarded. The base was crumbly and the upper branches were really thin. The tree has recovered from both these indignities very well, and it no-longer really justifies the T5 rating. I'll leave it as-is, so as not to mess up people's D/T grids, but in reality this one is terrain 4.5. Consider it a vanity grade if you like!
