Randolph (Randy for short) was the perfect rain-deer, tall, broad shoulders, full of muscles, the desire of all the does. Randy's life path was certain, he would be the lead rain deer once he could fly, and He was to be Santa's best friend. To bad for Randy, his status started going to his head, he was better, and he knew it! That is still no excuse to bully anyone, especially a younger brother.
Rudy was a skinny deer and thanks to a birth defect (weak neck not supporting his head properly) he had developed a shiny red nose that some would even say "it glows". Rudy never was destined for greatness, and hid often among the pines to stay out of everyone’s way. You could say Rudy took roads less traveled by most people but found the solitary country life pleasing.
As soon as that fateful school year started Rudy knew life would never be the same. Randy, his friends Dancer, Prancer, and, Vixen, ruled the school, and picked on everyone small and week. Rudy avoided them as often as he could but they always called him names, Pinocchio was their favorite. Randy won all of the school games and Santa was well impressed. Of Course Rudy was not even allowed to play.
Then in a twist of fate, global warming struck and the ice caps started to melt. As Christmas Eve approached, the cold weather created fog so thick that getting around the North pole was always a hazard. One night Randy, and Gang, were chasing Rudy through the fog. Rudy ran past the North Pole, but Randy ran right into it. With a loud pop, Randy broke his neck and Santa restricted travel around the North Pole to "walking only". Then Christmas Eve arrived and the only thing visible in the fog was Randy's neck brace, but it was too heavy to fly and Rudy's nose. Santa had no choice, Rudy became lead rain-deer and by fate he assigned Dancer, Prancer, and Vixen to follow Rudy in flight. The rest of Rudy's life story we all know, but what happened to Randy.
He wondered south looking for a place that a broken necked rain-deer could live out his life in peace. When he reached Utah, he settled on this very spot, so the town was named Randolph in his honor. Some say he brought the fog with him which often occupies the valleys of Rich County on cold winter nights.
