Seney National Wildlife Refuge is located in the Great Manistique Swamp. The refuge is a mosaic of bulrushes, nesting areas, shag forests, and shore-lingering waterfowl containing more than 95,000 areas of swamp situated in the upper peninsula. This area offers the 7-mile Marshland Wildlife Drive, which takes you through a restored wetland created by a series of manmade dikes. Driving through this national refuge, you are rewarded with close-up views of more than two hundred species of birds and a variety of animals such as beaver, muskrat, and otter. The wetland is composed of 21 artificial pools and 750 islands, all created to aid in the protection of wildlife. Special attractions on this route are the reflection of a Great Blue Heron walking through a still pool, the flutter of birds, and the splash of animals such as beaver and otter.
