The Cottonwood River, one of the principal tributaries of the Neosho, is formed by the union of two branches known as the north and south forks. The north fork rises near the west line of Marion county. It first flows southeast, crossing the east line of Marion county about 12 miles north of the southeast corner, and thence northeast to Cottonwood Falls, Chase county. This magnetic cache can be reached while standing on the bridge itself -- there is no need to scale the banks or climb any of the bridge girders. Please do NOT park in the middle of the bridge; you should be able to park on either the north or south side of the bridge. There is significant concrete edging missing along with some railing so watch any small children or animals. The bridge has been listed as "Structurally deficient" since 1990 and is recommended for replacement.
