A river is a natural watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, a lake , a sea , or another river. In a few cases , a river simply flows into the ground or dries up completely at the end of its course , and does not reach another body of water. Small rivers may be called by serveral other names , including stream , creek , brook , rivulet , and rill. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location ; examples are "run" in the United States , "burn" in Scotland and northeast England , and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always:the language is vague.
TOPOGRAPHY:
A river begins at a source ( or more often several sources) and ends at a mouth , following a path called a course. The water in a river is usually confined to a channel , made up of a stream bed between banks.
The term upriver ( or upstream) refers to the direction towards the source of the river, i.e. against the direction of flow. Likewise , the term downriver ( or downstream) describes the direction towards the mouth of the river , in which the current flows.
The St. Johns River is the longest river in the state of Florida. At 310 miles long , it winds through twelve counties and drops in elevation less than 30 feet from the headwaters to the mouth. The flow rate of the St Johns River is very low , 0.3 mph and is often described as "lazy" river. The St. Johns River it is one of the flattest major rivers on the continent.
The St. Johns River is one of the few rivers in the U.S. flowing north !!!
RIVERS ALWAYS FLOW SOUTH , DON'T THEY:
For some reason, a large segment of the population believe that rivers most commonly flow south due to some geophysical property. All objects on earth , flow downhill due to gravity. No matter where the river, it will take the path of least resistance and flow downhill as rapidly as possible. Sometimes, this path is south and , just as likely can be north , east , or west, or any combination of the directions of the compass.
The St. Johns River as the parallel Kissimmee River uniquely, shares the same regional terrain, although the Kissimmee flows south and not north like the St. Johns River. The least resistance for the St. Johns River is north and the least resistance is south for the Kissimmee River.
