If you are sitting at the bench near the mini roundabout, you are looking at the area believed to be a possible place where Harold fell during the Battle of Hastings, according to a Time Team special. Although the official, registered, site is within the Abbey grounds. Where you see the road heading off down the hill to Hastings, they believe that was the direction William came from with his army, with Harold's army at the top of the hill. The rest, as they say, is history!
Congratulations to Velosaurus for being first to find.
