Crafted in the form of an obelisk, The Bluff War Memorial is built of Bluff granite actually norite. It was quarried by hand in large blocks from a McDougall Street site and it was not until 1926 that power became available that electric saws were used to carve the blocks.
Looking across the harbour to Tiwai Point, Maori until 1455-1500 quarried the rock into various tools, fish hooks, spears, and axes for felling trees.
