Geocache Description:

An offset-type cache in a large (between 2.5 and 4 gal.) well-camoflauged container in a beautiful wooded setting.

This cache is at a crossroads - a physical crossroad, a crossroad in time and a crossing of hobbies and interests. A crossroads is a place of decisions, a point of dissection or division…

The founder of the website www.bookcrossing.com claims to have been inspired by the success of Geocaching.com, so why not return the favor?

This cache was placed with twelve books, all are registered at Book Crossing and in a state of “wild release”. Each has one of our GeoGadgets Calling Cards to use as a bookmark if you choose. Most of the titles are science fiction or fantasy and I won't apologize for that… you can replace them with the books of your choice, genres of your choice - but this is a THEMED CACHE, so place ONLY paperback books inside. Please exchange books in even numbers, i.e. - take one, leave one or take two, leave two. Otherwise this cache will become a dump for books people don't want anymore.

Please go to www.bookcrossing.com and register the books you plan to "read and release" into the cache before you bring them here to swap, and follow the directions. It would be greatly appreciated by those who come after you. If you are not sure how to do this, EMAIL

The coordinates listed ARE NOT the location of the actual cache. Heavy tree cover makes getting a good GPS signal near impossible. Make sure that you take a pencil and paper, a calculator, PDA, or whatever you would need to do some simple math and take notes while out and about. Once you get the first coordinates, you will need a compass - to work the offset - yep, it's an offset cache! It just gets better and better.

First: Once at the coordinates above, note that you are at a historical crossroads AND a more modern crossroad. Please take a minute to learn something of the history of this area. Then, using a compass, take a bearing of 32° for about two-tenths of a mile (you shouldn’t leave your vehicle at the original coordinates. There is a decent place to park where you are headed).

Second: You will know you are at the right spot to start the next leg when you encounter a “road” that ends at a split-rail fence. Where the road ends and the trail begins take a compass bearing of 115° and walk until you reach a spot where there is a large, solid indication that humans were once industrious here.

Third: From the Northeast corner of this object, take a bearing of 111° for approximately 100 feet. Search this immediate area for your target. The cache container is large, but well disguised and well concealed and you will have to be close to see it. There are some indications that this is a popular place to walk the dogs, but I have never seen anyone here, just discovered what they leave behind. Note this and check your shoes before getting back into your vehicle!

It may sound as though there are a lot of restrictions on this cache, but it is a new type of cache and each book is essentially a travel bug that has its whereabouts logged. I want it to be successful and to see folks do this in other areas!

Books in the cache include:

  • Ship of Magic - The Liveship Traders Book I - by Robin Hobb
  • Exiles Volume I: The Ruins of Ambrai - Melanie Rawn
  • Dragonlance Chronicles Vol. 2: Dragons of Winter Night - by Weis and Hickman
  • The Left Hand of Darkness - by Ursula K. Le Guin
  • Otherland Volume Three: Mountain of Black Glass - By Tad Williams
  • Analog Yearbook II - Edited by Stanley Schmidt
  • The Hobbit - by J.R.R. Tolkien
  • The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Book One - by Stephen R. Donaldson
  • The Ship Who Sang - by Anne McCaffrey
  • The Clan of the Cave Bear - by Jean M. Auel
  • The Dragon and The George - by Gordon R. Dickson
  • The Wheel of Time, Book Nine: Winter's Heart - by Robert Jordan

If everyone is good about logging their visits online and describing what they take and leave, I will keep track of this cache’s contents on the GeoGadgets website. This cache has it’s own page, HERE, and you can visit there to learn even more about this cache.
