Geocache Description:

A small green-lidded box. BYOP.

Elie beach has been a regular winner of Blue Flag and Seaside awards for the quality of the beach and its facilities. This beach was historically mechanically groomed to remove litter from the beach. This process also removes beached wrack which provides a home for macro-invertebrates which act as a food source for many shorebird species. The wrack also acts as fertiliser for dune plants as it decomposes. So the removal of wrack can result in negative impacts on biodiversity and dune stability. Consequently there is a conflict of interest between tourists and biodiversity when beach grooming is employed. Beach grooming was ceased here in 2011.

At the University of Stirling we have been working with local councils and beach managers in Scotland to help devise best practice in the management of beaches. We are interested in canvassing beach users opinion of how beaches in Scotland should be managed. Although not a requirement of doing this cache we would be very grateful if any one doing this cache (or just reading the cache page!) could also complete the attached survey which will be available until the end of September 2014.
