Summersville Dam Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Goddess of Wisdom: I am archiving the cache because someone took the hiding place! A couple of recent finders discovered the container out in the open and the contents scattered. It used to sit down inside an old, moss-covered cinderblock - which is now missing - so exposure and vandalism of the cache has been the result. Sorry about the problem!

Geocache Description:

A small cache hidden near the picnic/playground area along State Route 129, just off the western end of Summersville Dam.

Summersville Lake was constructed between 1960 and 1966 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in order to control flooding in an 803-square-mile watershed along the Gauley River and the Kanawha River. At 390 feet tall, 2,280 feet long, and containing 12,000,000 cubic yards of dirt and rock, the dam itself is the second-largest rock-fill dam in the Eastern United States. President Lyndon B. Johnson dedicated the dam on September 3, 1966.
From Route 129, turn into the picnic/playground area and find a parking spot as close as you can to ground zero. From there proceed on foot to the hiding place. You can either bushwhack straight downhill, which is the shortest way, or you can take the wide gravel path used by swimmers, cliff divers and fishermen during the summer months, which is a bit longer but will make your way to the cache less difficult.

The cache is in a 13oz. Lock & Lock container with a log sheet, pencil, and a variety of small, family-friendly trade items. Please be alert for muggles when searching for this cache - particularly during the summer months!
